Wall Climb

Give us your impression about why we all got over the walls on Friday and rarely got anyone over on Thursday?

I think it was easier the way we did it on Friday. Another thing that was different and that helped somepeople, was the fact that you could see both walls and the people in between the walls. Also, it was easier to lift people on top of the small wall.

This activity seemed SO simple...
The first thing that went through my mind when I saw the mats being set up was that I could climb it through the slots. But, as I soon saw, climbing wasn't exactly easy. Yet, I saw two people step up and get on the other side, which was quite exciting to watch... The first day of the activity, I was surprised by the fact that people didn't want to go over. Once again, like in the rope activity, certain people were freaking out about having others hold them. I really feel that people in general need to stop saying and start doing, as there were always a few who said they would go first and never went. And then there were the handful of people who were embarassed of climbing because of people laughing. I honestly feel that if you are going to laugh, you don't belong in a place where people want to enjoy themselves, not become the laughing stocks of the class.
-----end day 1-----

The second day was QUITE exciting. First of all, just the fact that we would climb the smaller wall first put somewhat of a security in me. The large wall was daunting, but the small one was nothing. I think that people, knowing that they could easily make it over the first wall, became confident and walked out of their "Zones"...
It was exciting to watch as people therefore began to step it up a notch and make it over the wall, sometimes tumbling and sometimes landing properly.

It was quiet suspenseful waiting for people to get over the large wall and hoping that they didn't fall, which would have been disappointing...

Overall, I can't wait until we start from the other side of the wall, as that will really get us working as a team.

I think that no one trusted the people that were doing the lifting on thursday because there not the usual stronger people in the class that lift us in other activities. The wall was also a lot higher and it was harder to pull yourself up on the big bar then the small one. I thought friday was easy because the people inside the walls were stronger and they werent dropping people. Also the small wall was a lot easier to pull your self over.

It was easier on friday because we made a plan before we started. On Thursday we just jumped right into it without anyone knowing what was going on. I think it was easier to start with the small wall also.

We were able to get over the wall easier on Friday because we started with the smaller wall first. It wasn't as intimidating to get over. I think it is better we started like that with the smaller wall to the bigger wall, because now we have a better feel of this activety. I think now that we have succeeded getting over both walls, we can do it again the other way. I think that boosted some more confidence. And for those who still don't feel comfortable, we will just have to work harder in helping to make it easier for all of us to work together and to be able to make mistakes without being embarrased or humilliated.

i think it was easy to get over because we really trusted the people in the middle to hold us. i wasn't here friday so i can't compare but this is why i liked it.

I think that friday was easier because we could actually see the people that are supposed to carry us which made it actually feel safe. But to be honest I think these activites we've been doing arent really that good. It's really uncomfortable having people carry you. I know it's the point to get over that uncomfortness, but I really dont think it's necessary at all. there's other ways to build trust.

Dear 456 (I Think?)
If you have other ideas on how we can build trust I would like for you to share them with me and I will put them in to practice. I'm always open for new ways for students and people to be able to really listen to one another and actually care for them

personally on friday i didnt care to go over the wall because no one cared to talk about it they just started and had no plan and acted like they were in charge. after the comments at the end of class it really helped us the next day not necessarily because we started with the shorter wall but we made a plan and sorted out everything we did wrong the day before so that it was easier for us to succeed

I think that the second way we did it was less intimidating I also think that people need to speak up I know I sure can't read minds. If you say something to the person next to you I would bet that no one else heard you.So if no one but that one person hears you how are the rest of us supposed to know your idea. I think if more people in the class came forward with there ideas we could have made it over the first time.

Maybe we could do the blind folding activities again. We could make them more difficult so our trust will have to increase. I really thought it was fun doing that too.

I think that we didn't get anyone over on thurs. because nobody was really participating and when some people went to go give their ideas the people that were "in charge" didn't really care or listen so those people decided to give up on the activity. On friday we actually had a plan and people were listening to each other, and it was easier to get over because we used the little bar first.

I agree on the aforementioned impressions on this wall climb. In the vast majority of all things, people usually start off taking small steps. I think that beginning with the tall wall was the wrong idea at the wrong time. My first thought was "You have GOT to be kidding me."

Since buliding trust takes small doses and climbing over things takes small doses (I sure hope that's the way for everyone else), then, after reflection, I thought that starting with the tall wall was a very illogical beginning. When I discovered that period 6 started with the small wall on Thursday, I was a tad indignant, but got over it on Friday when we got to do the same thing, which was easier and, as some have already said, less intimidating.

I have questions for Mr. H:
Why did you have us start with the tall wall on Thursday? Did you feel that our class trusted each other enough to be able to accomplish such an obstacle? Or did you learn from our class that starting there was too extreme/difficult?

I am just curious about our teacher's train of thought. =]

I think we were more determined on Friday. And since we organized before, I think we had a bettter idea of what we were going to do.
On Thursday, I also thought going from the tall bar to the shorter bar was more daunting than going from the short to the tall one.

i think that thursday was a lot more intimidating, and i still don't wanna go over the tall wall first. but yeah, i think that it was a lot easier to get from the small wall to the big one.

I thought it was difficult but we accomplished it and it was a team builder and it was also fun and exciting.

i thought that we didnt bring our A game on thursday but we knew what we were doing on friday and we had a gameplan.

Okay so the first time we tried climbing the wall it was like really scary because i am so afraid of heights and since we didnt have much of a plan i didnt feel to secure to try climbing it.
The second time we climbed the wall i felt more secure because i could actually see the both walls and i knew what was going to happen ahead of time. since we had a plan i knew that my classmates who were holding us to get to the wall knew what they where doing so i felt more secure to go.

I think that the first time we did this activity everyone was nervous because not everyone was aware of any plan that was going on. However, on Friday we discussed what we were going to do first, so everyone was a little less afraid to do the activity. Also, it helped starting on the other side of the bars.

Once we listened to Kaitlin's swim team idea, we all had the same idea as to how to get over. We talked it out and it worked.

Also, we didn't have to lift people up over the high wall, which would have gotten extremely uncomfortable for some people who were just chilling in the back.

I think we should ditch the anonymity of this blog.

i really dont care if theres anonymity on the blog or not. its not going to change what i say on the blog and its kinda sad that some ppl feel so insecure in themselves or are so intimidated by others that they cant voice their opinions without feeling nervous about what other ppl are going to say about them. if ppl post as themselves, it will probably (maybe) create more discussion in class cause ppl can post on here and then talk about it later.

It was easier for people to get over the wall on friday because they could see both the walls and the people in between them. The fact that we were going over something small first and going over something bigger probably made it easier for people as well.

I actually enjoy this activity now that we are getting through it with ease. The first time we had trouble because we didnt have any ideas and we didnt listen to each other. I think the way you enclose us together gets us closer so that more people overhear ideas and are able to share them better. I like how we are using the rope now too.
Sam's idea is good too

I think we did so well the second time because we listened to each other, but more importantly, we talked to each other, which is a big step for us because usually, everyone complains but they won't tell anyone what's wrong or how we could fix it so no one understands each other. But we had a really good plan this time!

I think putting the mats on the ground was a good idea, because it made it a lot easier. I just wish we did that earlier because it would have been easier for everyone then, but I realize we didnt think of it till the end.

i think the problem with this activity for me was because i didnt trust myself. i didnt think i could pull myself over the wall. but i do think that people could of been more encouraging and they shouldn't have said comments like "its not that hard just do it!"

Anonymous said...

it was easier friday because we had the rope to have our feet lifted so it wasn't that hard to get over ourselves.

i think that it was easier going form the small wall to the high bar. but i dont think that everyone trusted who was lifting them and that was a problem. but we go it done.
