Why do you think that it is important to get everyone involved in the activities that we do, remember our five finger contract? ( safety,physical/emotional, commitment, respect, responsibility, and fun)

I think that it's important to involve everyone in the activities we do because, well, we're a team. Teams do things together; if one person stumbles, the entire team stumbles.
Our five finger contract does come into play, both the physical and emotional parts. We must be safe, obviously (that's why we do things as a team, to make sure people are safe when they're being lifted or climbing over walls). We're committed to our gym class; we have to be otherwise the things we do won't work. I think that we are becoming respectful to each other; we listened to the people who had innerstruggles to get over the wall and understood if they either went over the wall or didn't (I was one of those people). Also, our responsbility is demonstrated throughout the activities, especially for the guys in the middle section of the wall climb activity. And last but not least, the fun. I think that if everyone does the preceded things (which I have seen regularly), then this 50 minutes will not drag, but will fly by. If everyone follows this contract, then we all should be automatically involved in the activities that we do.
I'm beginning to realize the importance of this contract we made at the beginning of the year.
I think that it is very important that everyone is involved. If someone does not feel comfortable doing an activity then we will have to alter it slightly so that they end up gaining more trust in the class. I don't think it is bringing our class closer when we let people skip an activity. I am not saying that people can't be scared, but I am saying that as a class we can face our fears. -Caitlin G.
Its important for every one to be involved in the activities because if there not then when it comes time for climbing or something where we need a partner, your not going to know if you can trust that person because they never wanted to do anything in class. People who dont try arnt going to be trusted with important things in the future. Sarah S
I think it is important that everyone gets involved because that is what teamwork stands for. I think as a gym class we need to work together to meet everyones needs and people need to be upfront about their needs.
Part of the five finger contract is physical/emotional. I think everyone needs to be emotionally ans physcically ready to do all activites. If someone is stuggling with one of those concepts, as a class we need to fiqure out how to help them. Once this is accomplished we can have fun and accomplish something as team.
i agree i think that if you don't get involved now people wont feel comfortable trusting you later especially if theyre not paying attention. And letting people skip activites may seem okay but all the activites are meant to lead up to climbing and skipping activites wont help us get there -Erika L
It is important that we all work together and get everyone involved because we arent really a "we" if we arent all working together. Accepting that sometimes there are good reasons for people sitting out of an activety is a great way we work as a class, but it turns out that the same people end up coming up with the same excuses to sit out of these activeties every time. If someone feels that they cannot do something, they need to confront the rest of us and then it is our job as a class to help that person overcome their fear or discomfort in the activety. If the point of Outdoor Adventure class is to get past our comfort zones, then we have to do just that. It is also not fair that maybe five people wont try, but the rest of the class goes out of their way to overcome their conflictions with what we're doing.
I know that we feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of an activety, which we should, but I don't feel completely satisfied when the entire class in reality did not complete the obsical.
I'm really looking forward to this year. I feel we as a class are going to do a great job in getting this class together as one team. ^.^ and plus once we master our awsome ninja team-building skills, we're gonna make one group of climbing/repelling awsomeness!
I think that it's important for everyone to be involved because then we get a chance to get to know everyone and help people over come their fears. Also I think that everyone should have to participate in the activity that we are doing and not skip out. I know that there were activities that I was uncomfortable doing but I didn't skip out because I knew that if I did it, I would benifit from it in the end. I think that if a person wants to skip, the whole class needs to talk about it before those people just skip, because we could help modify the activity for them to make them comfortable with it.
I think its important that everyone is involved because later on we are going to have to place our trust in someone else's hands. We should be able to feel comfortable and know that people in the class are paying attention. -Carly S
I think it's important to involve everyone in the activities because sooner than you think, we will be doing more activities in which you will have to trust people you arent normally associated with and have to realize that you cant rely on the same people to cover for you and save you when it matters. -Ken M.
I think that something that would help me personally to get involved in the activities a little bit more is if Mr. Hinojosa didnt talk for 15 minutes beforewe do anything. its just hard for me to want to pay attention to an explanation simple activity that ends up being a 10min. speech. same thing goes for after the activity. its fine if ppl give feedback about how they felt about the activity or for some instrutions and some question/answer time, but today for example, i probably heard mr. hinojosa say the same idea with the knots and the falling that we are going to move on to eventually like four different times. funnily enough i have the same problem with my parents. also, the fact that i know all this shows that i wasnt actually sleeping through the speech at the end of class today (or most days, actually).
ive done some thinking and i agree with the ppl who said that we cant just let ppl dodge comfronting their fears, cause its only going to get worse later on.
well, as a person who wanted to skip the wall climbing activity I'll put it this way for you guys. For me, it was because I was afraid I was going to fall off and not be able to balance myself. Which ended up not happening (whew). But I think why some people do not want to be included in some activities is the way some people in class make unnecessary comments. Would you like an example? Instead of saying, "OMG it's not that hard just pull yourself up and climb over!" How about calming yourself down and saying, "All you have to do is put your foot here then they'll pull you up and we'll be here to spot you" I think only a couple of people in the class actually say it like that. Because all I hear around me when we're doing team building stuff is people laughing at someone how stupid they look or how their butt crack is showing when they're doing an activity. So yes, it is important for everyone to be involved because this is a teambuiling activity, but will we ever become a team with constant outburts like that?
I am already feeling better, trust-vise. I feel that the class is improving and something I noticed was that during the wall activity, there was less laughter when people got over. There is a strong need for class participation. As a gym class, and of course as an outdoor adventure class, we still need to improve on breaking our personal spaces. I was concerned by the fact that certain people didn't participate. I feel that in order to progress like so many people have mentioned we have to allay our fears. The first step is speaking out and I am sure everyone will listen. With that going, no one will be left out and everyone can express their views. That way at least people can feel safer.
I think it's important for everyone to participate b/c if we are going to function as a class, we have to do things and talk about things as a class. About the finger contract, we have to use all five fingers in order for every activity we do to go smoothly.
I think that everyone in the class needs to participate because if were all not doing the activity then were all not expieriencing. Plus all of the activities will help build trust in eachother. -Jessi M.
I think it's important for everyone to be involved so that each person knows what it's like to be in the same situations as everyone else. If one person is afraid to attempt something, most likely there are other people in the class who are too, so we're all in the same boat. Also if everyone gets involved in the activities, we start to work together as a class, which gets us a lot farther down the road then if there's some people who are sitting out.
I think everyone should get involved that way if someone is feeling insecure about something we can help them get thrugh it also ,you my never know that person might have a good idea about how to overcome the activity that we're doing.
heres some more ideas: 1. kets have some variety!!! almost every1 here has said that ppl being involved is important. ok, yes it is, but 10 ppl saying the same thing is just as useful ase 1 person saying and every1 else saying "yes, i agree. heres another idea that i had..."
2. on that note, one part of the 5 finger contract that no1 has talked about at all is the 'fun' part of it. i think that if we did more activities that are supposed to be fun that it would be helpful for getting ppl to be at ease with each other. for example, last year in my gym class we played almost all comptetive sports like dodgeball and soccer. they had nothing to do with team building, but by 2nd/3rd quarter we were all at ease with each other. im not saying that we all trusted each other completely, but we were at ease and had a good time in the class (it was coed too).
i think if we encourage our classmates and make them feel special they will have the confidence to do the activity. Also by making sure that they trust you and if not finding ways to gain their confidence in you. For example telling them a simple comment like i have your back you can trust me and actually do something that makes us trust each other more.
I think it's important to involve everyone in what we do in class because we are a team and everyone has their own place on it.If one person struggles then we all struggle and it's our job to try and help them relax and get them out of the struggle. But we can only do so much to help them so sometimes it becomes a personal thing.
The five finger contract comes into play a lot but at times certain people don't like to honor it and that's what makes things harder for the rest of us.I believe that the reason why this happens is because people are simply not willing to trust us and that's something that needs to change. It is important that we trust each other and participate and speak up when you have an idea about something. The contract is a reminder of the commitement we promised to make not only to gym class but to each other as well. Before we start repeling we have to get over this fear of each other and learn to trust everyone in class or else we will not be able to keep moving forward.
I have been teaching since 1995. I started teaching at Winston Campus Junior High in Palatine. In 2001 I began teaching at Fremd. I am an assistant golf and wrestling coach. I have also coached boys gymnastics and I was a sponsor for Powder Puff Football and Outdoor Adventure Club. I am the 4th child of 5, 3 older sisters and 1 younger brother. I am married and I have two great boys 2 1/2 year old and a 5 week old. Chase and Brody. I love it when I come home and chase yells out "DADDY" and has a big smile on his face and is coming to hug me.
